Sea Scouts

Sea Scouts is a specialized segment of the Venturing program, which was organized to address members' boating skills and promote knowledge of our maritime heritage.

Sea Scout units, called "ships," focus on sailing and cruising either sailboats or power vessels. During the boating seasons, Sea Scouts learn to maintain and operate then vessel, with a focus on learning the safe and proper methods of handling boats. Sea Scouts also learn the meaning of buoys and lights, how to take advantage of wind and tide, and how to drop anchor or approach a dock.

Most ships hold formal meetings conducted in either full dress of work uniforms. Swimming, lifesaving, first aid, Coast Guard Auxiliary Sailing and Seamanship, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation courses are taught with the ship by our own officers. The state safe boating course is also offered by many ships. Occasionally movies are shown, contests between crews are held, or intership visits are arranged.

Our Own S.S.S. Decisive

Aloha everyone,
here is the latest with the Kauai Sea Scouts:
We decided to haul the boat out for much needed maintenence over the spring break. The closest place euqipped to haul a boat of this size was in Honolulu. (Sand Island)
So at 5:00 in the morning on Saturday, March 16th, we set sail for Oahu.
The trip took us 2 days and we stopped to anchor the first night in Pokai Bay (waianae) before continuing on to Honolulu on Sunday.
The journey across the Kauai channel was made safer by 2 off-duty US Coastguardsmen who joined us aboard Decisive for the trip to Honolulu.
On Monday March 18th, the boat was out of the water and we began to go to work.
We stayed on board the boat and worked hard on the boat for the next 4 days. The kids would literally wake up at 0700 and start working on the boat. They have a real sense of ownership in their boat and wanted to make it nice, and they did!
They were granted shore liberty on Wednesday night and we all went to Ala Moana center. (A big excursion and luxury for us!)
Thursday we were back in the water and headed home.
We again moored overnight on the west coast of oahu and early Friday morning, we set sail for home.
We arrived in Nawiliwili harbor about 6:30 PM on Friday.
In summary:
This 8 day cruise covered over 200 miles, crossed the Kauai channel twice and was a successful haulout/maintenence, ensuring the Sea Scout Ship Decisive will be cruising Kauai for years to come!
Oh, and it provided great subject matter for the "how I spent spring break" assignment in school!
