National Youth Leadership Training

"Training boy leaders to run their troop is the

                 Scoutmaster's most important job." - Lord Baden-Powell

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

NYLT is a six-day course. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster.

Built on the legacy of past JLT successes, the new NYLT integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities, games, and adventures, participants will work and play together as they put into action the best Scouting has to offer.

NYLT FACTS

What is the course? National Youth Leadership Training is a six-day outdoor experience for youth leaders, conducted using a syllabus published by the Boy Scouts of America and supervised by the Aloha Council Leadership Training Committee.

How does NYLT work? Participants are placed in a group setting and split into Team. As Teams, participants engage in a month of unit activities compressed into a fun-filled week of training and experiences. The course strives to teach and provide opportunities to practice what a leader must know and do to be successful in a variety of situations.

The objectives of NYLT are:

  1. Give participants a basic knowledge of the skills of leadership and help relate these skills to their unit responsibilities and personal goals.
  2. Give participants the opportunity to share ideas and experiences and develop friendships with Scouts and Venturers from other units.
  3. Accomplish these goals by having fun in the outdoors.
  4. Give participants the confidence and knowledge to run their unit's program.
  5. Enhance the relationship between the youth participant and their adult leaders.
  6. Create an atmosphere where youth will experience Scouting at its best.

How does NYLT help the troop, team, or crew? The course is designed to strengthen the relationship between youth and adult leaders, improve the unit’s program, and help to develop the youth as leaders. Scoutmasters, Coaches, and Advisors should encourage your unit’s leaders to attend.
